Santa Barbara’s Lakey Peterson reached the quarterfinals of the Haleiwa Cholo’s Hawaiian Pro this week, marking another strong result for the 16-year-old in only her third professional surfing contest.
Peterson recorded the top two-wave score in both of her first two heats to reach the quarters, where she was matched up with Australians Tyler Wright and Felicity Palmateer, and Ojai native Sage Erickson.
The two Californians were ousted by the Aussies, and Wright continued to the finals where she was runner-up to champion Stephanie Gilmore. Peterson was in position to advance into the semifinals with Wright, as Peterson was in second for much of the heat. But Palmateer grabbed a 9.17-8.93 lead and Peterson could not find the neccessary ride in the closing minutes of the heat.
Peterson is not competing in the other Vans Triple Crown events at Sunset Beach or Pipeline, but will be in Australia in January for the next ASP World Junior Tour event.
Nice job Lakey!
always enjoy the blogs :]
I don’t think that a 9th place finish is worthy of writing an article about unless it is the Special Olympics or something.
