Marube fastest among thousands of SB marathoners

The Santa Barbara International Marathon joined forces with the long-running Half Marathon on Saturday, attracting thousands of competitors, spectators and volunteers in one of Santa Barbara’s largest annual sporting events.

Kenyan Moninda Marube was in a class all his own during the marathon, completing the 26.2 mile course in 2 hours, 25 minutes and 49 seconds. The closest to Marube was Cate School teacher Tim Smith, who was almost 23 minutes behind. It’s Marube’s third marathon title in 2010, previously winning in Illinois and Kansas City.

The half-marathon winner was from a bit closer to home as UCSB’s Julian Derubira was the first to reach the finish line in 1:06.23.2. Josh Spiker crossed three minutes later in second place and Waleed Totari was close behind in third.

Andrea McLarty won her second straight women’s title in the Santa Barbara Half Marathon with a time of 1:21:05. McLarty was also the inaguaral women’s champion for the full-length marathon last year when the two races were held a month apart.
