Laguna Blanca sees Brethren Christian do it again

Brethren Christian pulled off its second straight upset in CIF’s Division IV-AA playoffs on Saturday, stunning Laguna Blanca’s girls volleyball team 25-18, 25-21, 25-17 in the quarterfinals.

The Owls were the second seed but were hobbled and played without two regular starters.

“It just wasn’t there tonight,” said Laguna Blanca head coach Jim Alzina. “Anytime you have two starters go down it’s not good. It was another good season (but) injuries definitely hurt us.

“Our passing wasn’t where it needed to be. It was a little bit of everything.”

Brethren Christian entered the postseason as the third-place team from the Academy League. It won two matches on the road against higher seeds before hosting the Owls with the same result. Only two of the eight quarterfinal teams in Div. IV-AA weren’t league champions.
