Big West honors Johnson for career night

Junior guard Orlando Johnson has been selected as the Big West co-Player of the Week after his dominant offensive performance in UCSB’s 69-54 win over Fresno State on Saturday night.

In the victory over the Bulldogs, Johnson scored a career-high 35 points, the most by a UCSB player since February of 2007, and he added a career-high 11 rebounds, three assists and a blocked shot. The Seaside, Calif., native made 13-of-19 shots overall, including 4-of-5 from three-point range.

Johnson is now averaging 26.3 points per game, the third most in the nation, and in the last three games he has scored 89 points, 29.7 per game. Last year, he led the Big West in scoring at 18.0 points per game and was named Big West Player of the Year.

“Orlando is such a special player,” said Gaucho head coach Bob Williams . “He was so good on Saturday night. It’s easy to look at the points and realize that, but you have to look at the rebounds too. That’s just very impressive.”

UCSB will travel to north this week for a Saturday game at the University of Portland. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
