Antonia Antes had eight kills, two aces and a 10-point serving run in the third set on Tuesday night as SBCC swept Oxnard 3-0 in a women‘s volleyball match at the Sports Pavilion. The scores were 25-10, 25-16, 25-18.
The Vaqueros, ranked No. 11 in the state, improved to 18-5 overall and 7-1 in the WSC North. It was the fourth straight win and third consecutive sweep for SBCC, which has a first-place showdown with Moorpark (8-0) at home on Friday at 7 p.m.
“We stepped up tonight,” said Antes, a 5-9 sophomore from Big Bear who hit .538. “We’ve been working on blocking a lot and I guess I got lucky with my serves.”
Allyson Porter had eight kills and 11 digs while Kelsey Soos had four of her team’s eight aces. Hanna Powers led with 13 digs and Hillary Tomas had 11.
The Vaqueros jumped ahead in each set — 11-5 and 22-8 in the first, 12-4 in the second and 13-2 in the third after Antes’ 10-point serving run.
“We controlled our passing and our serving was one of the best efforts this season,” said coach Ed Gover, whose team has won 10 of its last 11. “We played with that calm intensity that we want. It was an excellent team effort.
“Antonia came out with fire in her eyes. She hit well, she passed well and her serving was the best I’ve seen all year. That ball had a lot of movement on it. It was a very good night for her.”
And what about the first-place showdown on Friday? SBCC and Moorpark tied for the WSC North title last year with 9-1 records.
“Moorpark got us in their gym and now they have to come to our gym,” Gover stated. “It’s going to be an excellent match and our players will be ready for the challenge.”
