COSTA MESA — Chrissa Trudelle and Amber Collier finished in the top 12 to help the Westmont women’s cross country team to a third-place finish Saturday at the 21st annual Vanguard Invitational at Fairview Park in Costa Mesa.
The Westmont men’s team, paced by a seventh-place finish by Jake Jeanson, came in fourth in the 14-school competition.
The team titles were won by the Azusa Pacific women the Vanguard men.
Azusa Pacific’s Poppy Lawman laid down the law in the women’s race, winning by 29 seconds with a 5-kilometer time of 17 minutes, 24 seconds. Four Cougars finished in the top 10.
Breeland Matranga of Point Loma (17:53) took second place and Jennifer Mallen of Concordia (17:55) was third.
Trudelle hit the finish line in 18:18 and teammate Amber Collier was close behind in 12th place in 18:34. Caitlyn Corrao was the next Warrior finisher in 22nd place in 19:04 followed by Kelsey Larsen (32nd, in 19:28) and Kate Stuart (33rd, 19:31).
Azusa Pacific scored 42 points as a team. Point Loma was the runner-up with 69 points followed by Westmont (108), Loyola Marymount (114) and the Cal Coast Track Club (129) in the top five.
Azusa’s Abednego Magut edged out John Gilbertson of The Master’s College to win the men’s 8k race. Magut was timed in 24:59 and Gilbertson in 25:00. Anthony Pizzo of The Masters was third in 25:16.
Jeanson, running at a 5:12 pace, clocked in at 25:47. Westmont’s next finisher was Jacob Goodin in 14th place in 26:34. The other scorers for the Warriors were Matthew Day (21st, 26:47), Matthew Shiney (25th, 27:04) and Brad Pearson (34th, 27:26).
In the team competition, Vanguard placed four runners in the top 20 en route to 61 points and edged out Azusa Pacific and The Masters, who both finished with 76 points.
