Westmont women’s volleyball team completed a sweep of the Golden State Athletic Conference’s most southern teams this weekend, defeating San Diego Christian by a score of 3-1 (23-25, 25-17, 25-23, 25-20) on Saturday night in Murchison Gymnasium. The Warriors defeated Point Loma in four games on Friday.
Freshmen middle blockers Marie Trudelle and Ciara Turner each had 15 kills to lead the Warriors(12-13, 6-10). Trudelle also posted a spectacular hitting percentage of .650. (15 kills, 2 errors, 20 attempts). Alison Sharp added another ten kills to the Warrior totals.
Candace Adema notched 51 assists while Kristin Schroeder led the team in both serve receptions (21) and digs (15).
Westmont got off to a slow start in the first set and fell behind 14-9. However, the Warriors battled back to tie the game at 23 before falling 25-23. In the second set, Westmont took a 10-4 advantage and never looked back.
In the third set, the Warriors turned a 10-10 tie into a 17-11 advantage before the Hawks(8-17, 1-15) rallied and pulled to within one point at 23-22. A Hawks’ attack error gave the Warriors set point, but Sigourney Rockmore landed a kill to make it a 24-23 lead. The Warriors closed out the set on a block by Heidi van den Oever and Ciara Turner.
Westmont jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the fourth set which proved to be the difference in the final score. A kill from Sharp was the final point, giving the Warriors the win.
Westmont returns to action on Tuesday when they travel to Costa Mesa to take on the Lions of Vanguard (13-12, 5-11).
