Warriors upset ranked Sea Lions

Westmont Women’s Volleyball (11-13, 5-10 GSAC) earned their first win this season over a ranked opponent as the Warriors defeated #14 Point Loma Nazarene (14-11, 8-8) by a score of 3-1 (25-18, 17-25, 25-23, 25-20) on Friday night.

Senior outside hitter Alison Sharp led the Warriors with 15 kills in the Golden State Athletic Conference game while freshmen middle blockers Ciara Turner and Marie Trudelle added 12 and 10 respectively.

With the first set tied at three, the Warriors put together a 9-3 run that included three kills by Trudelle and two by Turner. Westmont was able to outpace the Sea Lions the rest of the way in set one, closing it out on a kill be Sharp.

Point Loma responded in the second set by turning a 10-10 tie into a 21-14 advantage before tying the match at one set each with a 25-17 win. Destiny McIntyre produced two kills to earn the final two Sea Lion points.

The third set was more of nail bitter. Once again, Westmont surged ahead. With the score tied at seven, Westmont turned on the heat to post a 19-11 lead. The Sea Lions rallied and tied the game at 23, but their efforts fell short on a service error and a bad set, giving Westmont a 2-1 lead in the match.

In the fourth set, Westmont once again turned a close game into a runaway. Tied at eight, Westmont outscored Point Loma 9-4 to take a 17-12 advantage. Like the first and third set, the Warriors kept their distance from their pursuers and closed out the set and the match to claim the victory.

Sophomore setter Candice Adema produced 43 assists in the game while libero Kristin Schroeder posted a team high 22 digs. The Warriors used just seven players in the match.

Westmont returns to action tomorrow night when they host San Diego Christian (8-16, 1-14) at seven o’clock in Murchison Gymnasium.
