Westmont won easily in the first two sets by scores of 25-17 and 25-12, but The Master’s College rallied to take the third set 25-18, hung on to win 25-23 in set four and closed the door with a 15-12 win in the fifth set to take the Golden State Athletic Conference women’s volleyball match in Santa Clarita.
“This loss is on me,” said Westmont head coach Jim Smoot. “We started off so strong, but I pulled our starters after the second set. I’ve been coaching too long to allow this team to give up its momentum.”
The Warriors (9-9, 3-6 GSAC) reinserted their starters for game four, but could not turn the match in their favor.
“I am disappointed with our lack of aggressiveness,” said Smoot. “We weren’t serving the right person and our passing broke down.”
Despite the loss, Westmont remains in seventh place in the conference standings, However, the Warriors fall two games behind sixth place No. 16 Concordia (5-4 GSAC) and three behind No. 8 Azusa Pacific and No. 14 Point Loma Nazarene who are tied for fourth at 6-3.
Alison Sharp recorded 19 kills for the Warriors and posted a .286 attack percentage. She also tallied 13 digs.
