Thacher’s girls volleyball team ended Cate’s undefeated start on Wednesday, coming from behind to catch the Rams 20-25, 25-13, 14-25, 27-25, 15-9.
The Rams held one match point in the fourth game – thanks to Brenna Geiger’s clutch service run – only to see the Toads snatch it away and take the set. It forced a game five, which was Cate’s first five-setter of the season.
Freshman Cydney Pierce tallied a team-high 14 kills, and was supported by senior Addie Mayfield’s dozen. Gracey Gates and Annie Weis balanced the Rams’ defense.
“It was a fun battle,” said Cate head coach Greg Novak, who has his Rams at 5-1, 2-1 in the Condor League.
Cate plays a non-league match on Friday against Grace Brethren in its next match before returning to league play the following Wednesday versus the defending champion Owls of Laguna Blanca.
