Sergey Sushchikh won the Division II varsity race at the Clovis Invitational cross country meet on Saturday, finishing on the 5k State Championship course in Fresno in a time of 15:38 — 10 seconds ahead of the second-place finisher.
The DP boys finished fifth out of 25 teams as a hole, and Sushchikh’s time matched that of the Division I race winner.
“Best of all, he wasn’t even really taxed by the race and should be really fresh for our second league meet coming up on Thursday in Ventura,” said coach Leslie Roth.
The next fastest Charger was Bryan Fernandez, who just missed medaling and finished in 8th place with a time of 15:58. Sophomore Max Davis finished in 41st (16:33), Jacob Bartholomew was 47th (16:39) and Alfred Scott 67th (16:58).
On the girls side, Erin Campbell led the way with a time of 20:12 (47th out of 177 racers) as DP took 17th out of 26 teams.
“All of the varsity girls had a PR through 3 miles and we are still at our maximum training load! We were also missing Caylee Daniel, who was taking the SAT today,” said Roth.
Next was Sophie Pollack (51st) in 20:17, Sarah Jamieson (90th) in 21:04, Lara Schwalenberg (97th) in 21:08 and Miya McHugh (122nd) in 21:44.
Arcadia High School’s boys team broke the meet record with a team time of 77:09, the record held from 1993 with a time of 77:22.
