San Marcos High’s girls volleyball team witnessed a wild lightning storm in Ventura before it took the court against Buena for a Channel League match on Tuesday.
“It was quite show,” San Marcos coach Erica Downing said of the lightning strikes. “The lights went out in the gym for about 15 minutes and they couldn’t get them up again until the storm passed.”
Downing went on to say that her players saw lightning hit the ground and ignite something in the area near the high school.
“The surges were really powerful,” she said. “It was kind of crazy. We never see that kind of stuff. At around sundown, the clouds were kind of weird and the sky just lit up.”
As for the match, the Royals couldn’t catch lightning and lost 25-19, 25-15, 25-19.
Jaimie Maynor led San Marcos with 10 kills and only one hitting error, and Laura Masho had 11 assists and three service aces.
The Royals (0-7 in league) return to action Thursday at home against Laguna Blanca.
