Cate and Thacher will be playing for the Condor League title next Saturday, that after the Rams turned in a 45-0 defeat of Dunn this Saturday.
“This is the big one,” said Rams head coach Ben Soto. “This is the one the guys have been talking about since last year when we had a 21-0 lead and couldn’t hold it.
“It’s going to be a good game. We’re looking forward to playing for a league championship.”
Thacher has won every league title but one in the six years that Cate has had an 8-man program. Cate looked as though it was on its way to its second title last season, jumping out to a 21-0 lead against the Toads only to fall 42-34.
Eric Lowe’s field goal in the third quarter sealed the mercy-rule victory over Dunn, which pushed Cate’s unbeaten record to 7-0.
Cate quarterback Mackie Greason recorded two rushing touchdowns and connected with Jackson Mauze for a 40-yard TD completion in the first quarter.
Luke Shover opened the scoring with a 10-yard power run. Blake Wands added another touchdown on the ground in the first-half for Cate while Gregory Mak scored from 12-yards out in the third quarter.
Soto had good things to say about his defense, which caused several turnovers and completed its fourth shutout of the season.
“Our defense came to play,” he said.
