Halloween is still three weeks away but Cate’s 8-man football team is starting to look scary. The undefeated Rams dominated visiting East Valley on Saturday, posting their third mercy-rule victory of the season at 46-0.
Mackie Greason and the first-team offense scored at will, building a 33-0 lead by the end of the first quarter behind five touchdowns from Greason. Many of the starters, including Greason, didn’t play the rest of the way but saw the reserves close out the game while preserving the shutout.
On paper, the Rams are downright frightening having outscored their opponents 180-14 in four wins, which includes three shutouts. The Rams will undoubtedly see their stiffest resistance to date next week, however, in a Friday night game at the seventh-ranked team in Div. I, Lancaster Baptist.
“I’m really excited for when we have a real test and see what our guys can do,” Greason said.
Greason led Cate to its first 33 points on Saturday, rushing for three touchdowns and connecting with Jackson Mauze and Cormac O’Connor for passing scores – all before resting in the second quarter. O’Connor added a one-yard touchdown plunge to his day right before halftime.
“We haven’t really been a passing team in the past so we’re kind of surprising everybody with our passing game,” Greason said.
Blake Wands closed out the game in the third quarter when he picked up a fumble and crossed the goal line to ecplise the 45-point mercy-rule threshold.
Cate head coach Ben Soto has been working hard to avoid complacency during the Rams’ dominating start.
“I don’t care if we’re playing the (San Diego) Chargers, We just do what we can do and that’s all I can ask the guys to do,” Soto said.
