Piper Obradovich had a season-high 23 digs Tuesday night, helping SBCC to a 3-0 women’s volleyball sweep of Ventura in the WSC North opener at the Sports Pavilion. The scores were 25-20, 25-20, 25-12.
Obradovich, a freshman libero from Laguna Beach, is the daughter of former USC star and beach volleyball legend Steve Obradovich.
It was the first match in 11 days and just the second home match for the 10th-ranked Vaqueros (12-4, 1-0), who’ve won four straight overall and 18 of 19 at home.
Allyson Porter had 13 kills and 13 digs while hitting .324. Antonia Antes had nine kills and Jenn Waddill patrolled the middle with six kills and a .375 percentage.
Danielle Stewart served three aces and had a six-point run early in the third set as her team jumped ahead 10-3.
“The chemistry got better in the second and third games,” said sophomore setter Kelsey Soos, who had 33 assists and two kills. “Jenn did a really good job of blocking and our passing was better, which makes my life a lot easier.”
Hilary Tomas added 12 digs for SBCC, which battled to win the first set, then built leads of 20-10 and 20-9 in the last two sets.
“We knew Ventura is a scrappy team,” said coach Ed Gover. “They play great defense and balls don’t drop easily. We had to take the second and third swings before we got the ball down.
“We did a great job of terminating points on the third swing.”
