Hannah McDaniel wasn’t feeling well when she came to school on Thursday, but she wasn’t going to let her San Marcos teammates down when they faced crosstown rival Dos Pueblos that afternoon in a big Channel League tennis match.
With sole possession of second place on the line, McDaniel battled through three sets with partner Chloe Maassen. They managed to win one and that triumph sparked the Royals to an 11-7 victory at the DP courts.
“Hannah McDaniel played with a 101-degree temperature and played some of her best tennis today,” said San Marcos coach Jarrod Bradley. “That shows how much of a warrior she is. The rest of our team drew a lot of confidence from that.”
The Royals No. 1 and 2 doubles teams were dominant, losing only six games between them in their three-set sweeps. The No. 1 team of Christine Pearson and Amy Ransohoff lost just four games and improved to 38-7 on the year. Liz Morris and Parisa Fallahi raised their season record to 42-6 after their 6-0, 6-1, 6-1 victories.
In singles, DP’s Lauren Stratman continued her dominance of the Channel League, winning her three sets without any problems. On the other side, Caitlin Mannix and Jordan Lund earned four important points for San Marcos by winning two sets each.
“Jordan and Caitlin played high percentage tennis,” Bradley said. “Our focus really really showed. We didn’t let mistakes get us down. We were really, calm and composed at all levels. It showed in the close games. We played the big points really well.”
San Marcos improves to 13-4 on the season and finishes Channel League at 6-2. Dos Pueblos went 4-4 in league play.
Wow–impressive! Congrats to Hannah and her teammates.
