Milos Golic scored in overtime to lift the UCSB water polo team to a dramatic 11-10 win over Long Beach on Saturday at Campus Pool.
The Gauchos were in a 6-on-5 advantage with 2:34 left in the sudden-victory overtime when Golic beat 49ers goalie Matthew Kubeck with his seventh goal of the game. The total tied his career high for a game.
The win evened the Gauchos’ record to 1-1 in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation and raised their overall mark to 10-5. Long Beach fell to 0-2, 7-8.
The Gauchos trailed 6-4 at halftime.
Golic was huge all day. With just over a minute into the third period, he recorded his fourth goal of the game. UCSB tied the score on a shot by Brian Shoemaker from eight meters out.
Long Beach State’s Alexsandr Petrovic scored with 2:23 on the clock and took a 7-6 lead into the fourth period
The 49ers built their lead back up to two quick goals, but the Gauchos answered back with a goal from Evan Dellinger to put the score at 8-7.
Long Beach State then received two goals from Carter Taylor and Dan Matulis to give it a 10-7 lead.
Golic helped bring the Gauchos back with two goals and Joe Plume added one to tie the score at 10-10.
The Gauchos held on as Myles Christian had four blocks and the defense stopped Long Beach from converting on three man-up opportunities in the period.
UCSB travels to No. 2-ranked USC on Sunday.
