Women’s tennis opened its 2010 campaign with an impressive showing on day one of the inaugural UCSB Classic.
The Gauchos won four of eight singles matches on the day and one of four doubles matches against a highly competitive field.
In Flight “A” singles Freshman Kiersten Meehan recorded her first collegiate win defeating BYU’s Callie Craig 6-1, 7-5. In addition, Jill Damion came away with a victory defeating Elena Najara-Salas 6-4, 6-4, in her first fall tournament since her freshman year. She had missed her previous two fall seasons with injuries.
In “B” flight singles Erica Cano picked up a win for the Gauchos, while Casey Reede was on the short end of a 6-1,6-3 score. Alex McIntosh lost in straight sets in the “C” flight.
“For the first tournament of the year I think we competed really well,” said head coach Pete Kirkwood. “To win 50-percent of our matches with two freshman is a great accomplishment.”
In doubles, the tandem of Murphy and Cano won its “A” flight match 8-4.
The UCSB Classic resumes Saturday, with doubles beginning at 9 a.m. followed by two rounds of singles at 10:30 and 1 p.m.
