By the time he graduates, Chargers sophomore Bryan Fernandez wants to have broken a record every year at the Dos Pueblos Invitational. He’s half-way there after Friday, thanks to a record-shattering run of 16 minutes and 11 seconds on the 3-mile Shoreline Park course.
“Coming into this, I said my goal was to break the course record every single year and so far I’m 2-for-2,” Fernandez said, noting that he and teammates Max Davis and Ben York attained another goal of finishing 1-2-3 in the sophomore boys race.
Fernandez’s time topped the previous record by 36 seconds, set in 2009 by Rio Mesa’s Geno Arthur. While not breaking a record, Arthur did win this year’s junior race in 16:25.
Fernandez led the sophomore boys to the team win, with Davis and York following respectively. Cameron Fry and Wesley Cooperman filled out the scoring.
The 1-2-3 sweep was also completed in the junior and senior girl races, as defending State champion Saugus dominated the course. Centurion senior Stephanie Bulder was another runner who set a new course record with a time of 18:12. The old record was 18:59, set in 2005 by Long Beach Poly’s Tava Tedesco.
“Personally, I don’t really think too much about times because every place is different,” Bulder said, stressing the team’s goals instead. “What we’re working for basically, is another state title.”

San Marcos’ freshmen girls had a coming out party, winning as a team with five runners in the top eight.
“They ran an awesome race today,” coach Lawrence Stehmeier said. “They did the stuff that makes the next 3-4 years look really good.”
The Royals won the team sweepstakes in large part because of the freshmen’s performance.
Jewel Fisher was the fastest in the group, followed in order by McKenzie Funk, Krista Bowdle, Rachel Fay and Pauline Sines.
Katelyn Rheinschild helped San Marcos win the sweepstakes by providing a fifth place finish in the senior girls race.
The DPI course, set since 2005 when the event was moved to Shoreline Park, is a mostly grass-surface that is mostly flat except for a small downhill section and return uphill section in the second mile.
Dos Pueblos’ boys came in second in the senior boys race without their top runner, Sergey Sushchikh, who has a mild hamstring strain. Jacob Bartholomew crossed in third with a time 16:26 and Sam Sarmiento was in fifth, five seconds behind Bartholomew.
Fernandez’s freshman record only stood one year as Long Beach Poly’s Miguel Bautista eclipsed the mark by 24 seconds.
Laguna Blanca’s Marla Bonser broke 21 minutes to claim the Owls’ best result with a third-place finish in the sophomore girls race. Younger sister Nadia Bonser posted a sixth-place in the freshman race. Parker Lilly did not race for the Laguna boys, but senior Peter Jorenson gave Laguna Blanca its fastest time at 19:43.
Cate’s teams placed fifth overall against much larger schools in the junior and freshmen girls races. Juniors Denali Tietjen and Adrian Walsh stuck together in 19th and 20th with the same time of 22:21. Freshman Jasmine Paz gave the Rams a 15th place result with a time of 23:52.
