San Marcos played some of its best volleyball of the year and took the first set off crosstown rival Santa Barbara on Thursday night.
But the Dons picked up their game and took over the match, winning 23-25, 25-10, 25-13, 25-15.
“They played well,” Dons assistant Lee Carlander said of the Royals. “They came out ready to play.”
Santa Barbara got back in the match with its tough serving.
“We caught fire a little in the second game. We served tough in that second game and we cut down on our errors. We made too many errors in the first game.”
USC-bound Eve Ettinger paced the Dons at the service line with five aces. Emma Mascari had three aces and reeled off a seven-point serving run in the fourth game.
Ettinger led the attack with 12 kills, four digs and one block. Dani Rottman put away 11 kills and picked up eight digs; Holland Crenshaw recorded seven kills and Katy Villanueva and Remi Pulice each added five kills.
Next up for the Dons (15-7, 5-1) is a rematch with Dos Pueblos on Tuesday in Goleta. They need to beat the Chargers to earn a share of the league title.
