Santa Barbara’s Conner Coffin and Lakey Peterson made it to the final day of the Oakley World Pro Junior in Bali this week, finding their way to the quarterfinals before being stopped on Thursday.
The two Santa Barbara teenagers were a part of surfing history while contesting in the first ASP World Junior Tour event, which featured the world’s elite surfers under the age of 20 duking it out at Canggu and Keramas in Bali. The next stop is Narrabeen, Australia in January.
Coffin was ousted by Brazilian Caio Ibelli in a close heat 13.83-11.76. Evan Thompson, Kiron Jabour and Nat Young also went down in the quarters.
Peterson was brought down by a near-perfect Tyler Wright, who posted a two-wave score of 19.17 against Peterson’s 16.17. Wright went on to take the girls title while Jack Freestone claimed the guys title over runner-up Dale Staples.
The equal-fifth place was good for 5250 rankings points for Coffin, Peterson and all the other quarterfinalists. Ojai’s Sage Erickson reached the semifinals of the girls competition, capturing 6500 points. Wright and Freestone are in the driver’s seat to be the first ASP World Junior Champions heading to Narrabeen with 10,000 points each.
