Santa Barbara’s Conner Coffin and Lakey Peterson are making surfing history right now, in Bali for the first ever ASP World Junior Tour contest.

Peterson, who just turned 16 on Thursday, has already assured herself of at least a quarterfinal result by winning two heats and surfs again against Australian Tyler Wright. Peterson and Wright have already met in the quarterfinals of a major contest this year, with Peterson reaching the semifinals of the U.S. Open at Wright’s expense.

Coffin, 17, won his second-round heat on Sunday against Brazilian Jesse Mendes. Coffin posted wave scores of 7.17 and 6.83 by showing off his big frontside turns for a heat score of 14. Mendes made things interesting late by picking off an inside wave and landing a backhand air reverse for a 6.87, but nothing more materialized for the Brazilian.

Coffin matches up against another Brazilian, Alejo Muniz, in the third round.

A live web cast of Monday’s heats can be seen at OakleyProJunior.com. The $95,000 Oakley World Pro Junior features the world’s best surfers 20-years-and-younger.
