Why fly when you can get there faster on the ground?
Bishop Diego’s rushing attack scored seven touchdowns for the second straight week on Friday, carrying the Cardinals to a 47-14 Tri-Valley League opening victory over Malibu.
Brandon Gonzalez slashed to 174 yards and three touchdowns. Sophomore Jack Gregson made it 7 touchdowns in two weeks with two more on Friday, scoring on runs of 8 and 17 yards. Gonzalez had the longest scoring run of the afternoon on a 22-yarder in the second half.
“It all starts with our O-line. They’re playing really well,” said Cardinals assistant coach Matthew Capritto.
The game, which started at 3:30 because of the Sharks’ homecoming, was 27-7 at halftime.

Bruce Garcia tallied 70 all-purpose yards and scored on a 1-yard run while Jesus Valle took his only carry of the night in for a 3-yard touchdown.
Bishop Diego quarterback Nolan Tisdale completed 6-of-8 pass attempts for 100 yards and “managed a great game,” according to Capritto. Andrew Saucier returned to action and recorded 30 yards on the ground.
The Cardinals benefited from three turnovers recovered by the defense, including an interception by Nick Mon.
The 3-3 Cardinals can now look ahead to next week’s opponent, Santa Clara.
