Carpinteria’s six-game winning streak came to a screeching halt on Friday night at Oak Park as the Eagles used an 85-yard touchdown reception with just over a minute remaining to upend the Warriors 28-24 in a Tri-Valley League matchup.
Aki Zapata caught the last of his three touchdowns on a crossing pattern that he turned upfield after the catch, and scored the game-winning touchdown with 1:05 on the clock.
The victory improves Oak Park to 2-0 in league while the Warriors fall to 2-1. It was the first loss for Carpinteria (6-2) since a season-opening 36-20 loss to Morro Bay.
Zapata’s 85-yarder came moments after Alfredo Maya’s 39-yard field goal gave Carpinteria a 24-21 lead.
Paul Aguilar amassed 218 yards rushing for the Warriors and accounted for two of their touchdowns. Alex Rodriguez scored the other on a 28-yard scoring run in the second quarter.
