Kevin Cappon led a third-quarter surge with three goals to power No. 6-ranked Dos Pueblos to a 14-9 win at eighth-ranked Ventura in a Channel League water polo match.
“Ventura played well,” Dos Pueblos coach Chris Parrish said. “it’s a different atmosphere down there. Their pool is smaller, so it’s conducive to offense. You’re close enough shoot.”
Ventura hung with the Chargers in the first half, trailing by only two goals, 7-5. But Cappon took over and led DP to a 5-3 scoring advantage to open up a 12-8 lead.
Derek Shoemaker played a strong game for the Chargers with three goals, two assists and a steal. Chase Racich had three goals on six shots and won all four sprints to start the periods.
Dos Pueblos (14-3, 4-0) will face some of the best competition in the state as it heads to the Bay Area to play in the North-South Challenge. Among the powerhouse teams entered are Newport Harbor, Loyola, Mater Dei, El Toro and Los Alamitos from the Southern Section, the Bishops School from San Diego and Bay Area powers Sacred Heart, Acalanes and St. Francis.
