Westmont plays flat, gets swept by Point Loma

Westmont couldn’t match its aggressiveness and intensity from Friday night’s win and was swept at Point Loma on Saturday. The game scores were 25-23, 25-20, 25-17.

“After playing last night really aggressively (against San Diego Christian), we just played with our tail between our legs,” said Westmont head coach Jim Smoot, whose team fell to 8-7 overall and 2-4 in the Golden State Athletic Conference.

Point Loma is 8-7, 3-3.

“Hopefully, we will learn from this that when you are playing top teams, you have to be aggressive,” Smoot said. “It’s more about our aggression and what we are doing on the court than it is what our opponents are doing on the court.”

Collectively, the Warriors’ middle blockers managed just 11 kills against the Sea Lions.

“We served easy and our passing was very tentative,” said Smoot. “If we’re going to pass in a way that keeps us from running our offense and always having to set outside, then we are going to lose that battle.”

A bright spot for the Warriors was the performance of freshman Kayta Goyich. The right side hitter tallied 12 kills on 21 attempts with just two errors for a .476 attack percentage.

“I thought Kayta had her best match,” said Smoot. “She came out fired up and played very aggressive. I wish her enthusiasm had been contagious on our team.”
