Fresno Pacific’s Isai Orea and Amanda Johnson were winners at this year’s Westmont Cross Country Invitational, which showcased a new course on the Warriors’ campus.
Despite the lack of individual titles, Westmont’s men’s and women’s teams were champions together for only the eighth time in the event’s 30-year history.
The men ran an 8k race and the women a 5k on the up-and-down course that loops around the school, which has gone through some major renovations.
“We think we have a course we can use for years to come now with the campus being set,” said Warriors head coach Russell Smelley.
Jacob Jeansen was Westmont’s top man in the 8k. Jeansen finished in second, only three seonds behind Orea at 27 minutes and 27 seconds.
“I just went out with the lead pack and a lot of people died out. I kinda died at the end too but, that’s what I’m working on,” Jeansen said.
Matthew Day, Jacob Goodin, Paul Anderson and Gerardo Soria also recorded top-10 results for the Warriors, which propelled the men to their second straight title at the Invitational.
Westmont’s Amber Collier and Chrisss Trudelle took the second and third spots, pushing each other until the very end. Collier beat out Trudelle by a nose, her time a second better than Trudelle at 19:59.
Angelina Gonzalez and Caitlyn Corroa came across successively less than a minute later. Both finished under 21 minutes, with Gonzalez in sixth and Corroa and seventh.
“Today, the first four did their job. The back -five, six and seven – could be closer but I’m pleased with the overall performance,” Smelley said of his women’s team, which is ranked No. 17 in the country.
The Warrior women jammed 10 runners into the top 17.
