Vaqueros look for better start this week

SBCC hopes to get off to a faster start on Saturday at 6 p.m. when its football team travels to face Moorpark for the first time since 2006.

The Vaqueros (1-2) staged a stirring comeback after falling behind 35-0 in the third quarter of last Saturday’s game at La Playa Stadium. John Uribe racked up five touchdowns (4 passing, 1 rushing) and SBCC outscored Ventura 34-10 in the last 26 minutes but still came up on the short end of a 45-34 final.

Uribe, who threw for 317 yards, was named offensive Player of the Week by the American Pacific Conference. Uribe’s four passing TDs were one shy of Nick Acciani’s 2006 school record.

Sophomore linebacker Sam Shipley got the defensive Player of the Week award after an 18-tackle performance. Shipley is averaging a state-best 13.7 tackles per game.

SBCC had four turnovers last week, including three lost fumbles on kick returns.

Moorpark (1-2) snapped a 13-game losing streak last Saturday with a dramatic 22-21 win over Hancock. Zach Shultis won it on a 21-yard field goal with three seconds remaining.

Shultis, the Raiders’ QB, completed 28-of-41 passes for 216 yards and three TDs. Chris Gant, who had 16 receptions for 173 yards and two scores, is the No. 1 receiver in Southern Cal with 31 catches for 406 yards and eight TDs.

The Raiders lead the series 23-14-2 and have won four of the last five, including a 37-20 decision in 2006 at La Playa. SBCC won the last contest between the teams at Moorpark with a 17-14 triumph in 2005.
