Erika Schaeffer of SBCC placed sixth in the WSC Preview Cross Country meet on Friday and Garrett Edwards was ninth in the men’s competition at Oxnard College.
There were 95 finishers in the women’s 5K race, which was won by Brianna Jauregui of Glendale in 18:23. Schaeffer was clocked in 19:02 and teammate Ktahryn Carvin was 38th in 21:39.
There were 139 finishers in the men’s race on a four-mile course. Rico Gutierrez of Glendale won in 19:55 while Edwards was ninth in 20:54. SBCC’s Luis Garnica was 51st in 22:51.
SBCC didn’t have enough runners for a team score in either race.
“Not scoring as a team was a tough obstacle to overcome,” said coach Scott Fickerson. “We’ve been struggling with some injuries and eligibility issues, but hope to work those out and get a full squad out for our next meet.
“The athletes that did compete today ran strong races.”
The Vaqueros return to action on Oct. 9 in the Southern Cal Preview Meet in San Diego.
