San Marcos sweeps Carpinteria in opener

In a girls volleyball season opener between two local teams, San Marcos took control early and swept Carpinteria, 25-7, 25-9, 25-12, Thursday night on Jon Lee Court at
Maury Halleck Gym.

The Royals sprinted out to a 14-3 scoring spree in the first game. That was followed by
an 11-4 barrage made up of tough serving and strong attacking from the outside and middle positions.

Leading the San Marcos charge was senior setter Laura Masho with 21 assists and 4 aces. Emma Campbell added nine digs and Jaimie Mayner contributed with nine kills on 12 attempts.

“It was a really good chance to try a bunch of lineups and everyone contributed,” San Marcos coach Erica Downing said. “It was a feel-good kind of game.”

Downing is hoping her Royals can be competitive in every match this season.

“This year as opposed to last year, everything’s a lot more even in league,” she said. “We work hard and are really scrappy. I think that if we take care of our side we’ll be able to compete and surprise some people.

“We’re closer than we were last year.”

Carpinteria coach Katie Dolge is fielding a young squad this season.

“I have five sophomores and i’m using a lot of them,” she said. “This was the first game and we’re definitely getting the nerves out, which is good.”

Despite the one-sided score, Dolge said she was fairly happy with the way her team played against a Channel League school.

“They were giving it their all. I was happy with that. We have a lot to improve on in terms of team cohesiveness, but it’s going to be a good season, I think,” she said.
