Freshman forward Jenny Martinez scored the lone goal to give Westmont a 1-0 win over Holy Names on Saturday.
Martinez was coming of a two-goal game against William Jessup. She scored just before the end of the first half off a cross from Brit Scannell.
Ashley Correa started the sequence by playing the ball out wide to Scannell.
“It was probably one of the best goals we’ve scored all year,” coach Kristi Kiely said. “The keeper came out and Jenny threw her body out there and headed it over her. She got taken out in the process, but she got a goal.
“Jenny Martinez had been a threat all weekend,” continued the coach. “She and Brit continue to find connection up top and if we can keep that going, I think we will have a lot of success.”
Scannell was credited with the assist as she was on the second goal of Thursday’s game.
“Brit Scannell had a fantastic game defensively for us,” said Kiely. “We played her in the back today because we heard that Holy Names was pretty quick. She was still able to be involved in the attack.”
The move proved to be particularly important when Westmont (3-2-2) lost a key defensive player early in the game.
“About five minutes into the game Kayla Barkett went into a tackle and may have torn her ACL,” said Kiely.
The senior, who has been a mainstay of the Warriors’ defensive lineup, will be examined on Monday to determine the extent of her injuries.
“Amanda Diesen came in and stepped it up for us,” said Kiely. “She was able to hold her own in the back.”
