Preseason CIF polls were released for girls volleyball and boys water polo on Tuesday, offering a look at the early favorites expected to have very successful seasons in 2010.
Laguna Blanca’s girls volleyball team starts off the year with the No. 1 ranking in Division IV-AA. The Owls reached the CIF title match last season for the sixth time in the last nine years and finished with a 20-2 overall record. Laguna Blanca opens up its season on Friday at home against Brethren Christian.
Dos Pueblos’ boys water polo team has the highest rank of any local Channel League team, claiming the fifth spot in Division I. The Chargers return all-CIF selections Derek Shoemaker, Kevin Cappon and Chase Racich to a team that went 22-8 and reached the CIF quarterfinals.
The Santa Barbara Dons made the Division I top-10, matching Huntington Beach in the 10th spot.
BOYS WATER POLO * GIRLS VOLLEYBALL
Santa Barbara High’s girls volleyball team, a CIF semifinalist last season, received votes in Division I-AA while Dos Pueblos, the defending CIF champion, does not have a preseason ranking.
Carpinteria’s girls volleyball team is also ranked to start out the season. The Warriors, No. 5 in Division IV-A, will have a test in their first match on Thursday at San Marcos.
