Pierre Mattsson converted a penalty kick in the 31st minute Friday night and SBCC’s defense did the rest in a 1-0 men’s soccer win over Rio Hondo at La Playa Stadium.
Mattsson used his left foot to drill the ball into the lower right corner after the visitors were called for a hand ball.
It was the fourth straight victory and fourth consecutive shutout by Yonha Adrabi and the Vaquero defense. SBCC (5-1) vaulted from 11th to fourth in the South Region power rankings. It was only the second loss for the Roadrunners (8-2-2).
Kalum Horne and Chijioke Aranotu had several good scoring chances in the final nonconference game but Rio Hondo goalie Kevin Bustamonte denied them each time.
“With a little luck, we could have had a couple more,” said SBCC coach John Sisterson, whose team has outscored its opponents 11-3. “We have to work on our finishing. I think Kalum did very well up top and the defense was great, especially Roberto Santana.”
SBCC will complete a four-game homestand on Tuesday in their WSC opener. The two-time defending WSC champions will take on L.A. Mission at 7:30 p.m.
