Freshman forward Jenny Martinez scored the first two goals of her collegiate career as Westmont defeated William Jessup 2-0 on Thursday in a nonconference women’s soccer match.
Martinez scored what would turn out to be the game winner on an unassisted goal in the 62nd minute.
Brit Scannell took a shot that was deflected, Loni Rueff shielded the loose ball and Martinez came running in and smashed it past the keeper at the near post.
Martinez’s second goal came with just 2:45 remaining in the game.
Westmont coach Kristi Kiely was concerned that Westmont did not score more.
“Finishing is such an art and we worked on it all week,” she said. “It showed in that we scored two goals, but we needed to be able to put a few more away. We are still having trouble finding that.
“Certainly Jenny Martinez found it today,” continued the coach. “Because she looked so athletic in training all week and was finishing shots, I told (assistant coach) Dan (Ribbens) that I thought Jenny would score for us today. You could feel it all week that it was coming. She just needed to unleash it and she did today. Both goals were very well placed. She had composure on the ball and composure in the box. I’m glad that all of her work has finally come to fruition.”

Kiely like the aggressive play Scannell, who assisted on the second goal with a crossing pass to Martinez.
“Brit played the entire game outside and she worked very hard,” said Kiely. “Her ability to work for 90 minutes up and down the field and be able to penetrate the way she did was rewarded with an assist.”
Kiely also was pleased with the play of Westmont senior goalkeeper Roxanne Love.
“Rox came up with two very good saves,” noted Kiely, “one in the first half and one in the second half that was off a corner.
Melanie Greene was creative in the middle of the field and played with toughness, said Kiely.
The Warriors got a boost with the return of sophomore forward Ashley Correa, who missed the last three games due to an injury.
