Gauchos get easy one in opener

MALIBU  – The seventh-ranked UCSB men’s water polo team has spent most of its Labor Day weekend playing a series of scrimmages at UCLA and Pepperdine, but between the exhibitions, the Gauchos squeezed in their season-opener against Claremont-Mudd-Scripps on Sunday afternoon at Pepperdine’s Raleigh Runnels Memorial Pool. UCSB defeated CMS by way of a 15-3 score to open the season with a 1-0 record.

The Gauchos were able to jump out to a quick 6-1 lead in the first quarter and never looked back. UCSB scored a trio of goals in each of the ensuing three periods while limiting the Stags to just two more goals.

Three-time All-American senior Milos Golic led the Gauchos with his five goals on Sunday. The handful of goals brings his career count to 217, which is just 27 shy of Larry Mouchwar’s school record. Seniors Brian Bishop and Zsombor Vincze each tallied a hat trick in the win.

Freshman Scott Bishop, who is coming off of a redshirt year, tallied two goals in his debut with the Gauchos. Sophomores Evan Dellinger and Geng Wang rounded out the scoring.

UCSB scored four of its goal during six-on-five situations, going 4-for-6 during its power plays. The Gauchos limited the Stags to just one power play goal as CMS went just 1-for-5 in its six-on-fives.

In the goal, senior Fraser Bunn recorded five saves and sophomore Myles Christian posted seven.

UCSB will be in action again next Saturday, Sept. 11 when it hosts UC San Diego in a non-conference game at Campus Pool at noon.
