Dos Pueblos opened its water polo season on a high note, beating San Diego area powers Cathedral Catholic and The Bishops School on Saturday.
Against Cathedral Catholic, the defending San Diego Division 2 champion, the Chargers dominated the first three quarters en route to an 8-6 win.
“Defensively, we we were solid,” DP coach Chris Parish said. “We gave up two goals in the first period and held the scoreless until the fourth.”
Leading 8-2, Parish used several JV players in the final stanza when Cathedral Catholic scored four goals.
Derek Shoemaker scored 3 goals and Chase Racich added a pair for DP. In goal, Brady Moore made eight saves and Phillip Bates stopped three shots.
The Chargers, riding the wave of their big win, turned in another strong defensive performance in beating perennial power The Bishops School of La Jolla, 9-7.
Kevin Cappon was the standout in the game, scoring three goals and holding The Bishops’ top player to one.
“He had plus-2 on the day. That’s a pretty good day,” Parish said of Cappon.
Moore was stellar in the goal, making 14 saves.
“He was just a wall,” Parish said.
The Chargers (2-0) return to action Thursday at the Riverside Poly Tournament.
