In a season-opening match between two of the top girls golf teams in the county on one of the tougher courses in the area, Santa Barbara High scratched out a 254-263 win over Santa Ynez at Birnam Wood Country Club.
With its narrow fairways, there is little margin for error at Birnam Wood.
Santa Ynez’s Maddison Shean was the match medalist with a 3-over par 38. Kristin Henno shot a 42 and sophomore Christiana Layman carded a 45. There was a big drop off after that.
The Dons got good balance in the their scoring to pull out the win. Kylie Wagner led the way with a 45, and Olivia Fanaro was right behind with a 47. Haley True, the team’s No. 1 player, shot 52 and captain Sarah Kirkwood had a 53.
Both Santa Barbara and Santa Ynez have experienced squads and they figure to challenge for their respective league titles and regional playoff berths.
