Most of Bishop Diego’s girls volleyball players are sophomores and juniors, but the Cardinals are still a seasoned squad. That’s because most of the starters have played varsity since they were freshmen, and that experience showed on Tuesday against rival Carpinteria.
Bishop’s ball-control was in mid-season form in the early season matchup, leading to a balanced offensive attack and a 25-10, 25-11, 25-14 sweep in the Warriors’ gym.
Diana Sleep led the Cardinals with nine kills, while Lauren Underwwod and McKenna Hogue each had five. While Sleep was hitting efficiently from the left side, her twin sister Paige was busy adding four kills and a 10-point service run midway through the first set. Greta Rennacker finished off the set with three aces on the final four points. The Cardinals totaled 15 aces in the match.
The Warriors were led by Maddie Brooks, who had three kills and a block, while Meli Musson and Shelby Dunlap each had six digs. Genny Annable had a pair of aces at the service line.
After scoring the final six points of the first set, the Cardinals took a 9-0 lead to start the second and never looked back. Annable opened the third set with an ace, but Bishop took control as Lauren Underwood recorded four sets in five points to give the visitors a 10-2 lead.
The Warriors play at Rio Mesa on Thursday, while the Cardinals play Laguna Blanca on September 23rd.
