Cardinals a cut above the rest in Frontier meet

Charlie Dentzel, bad shoulder and all, claimed third place for Bishop Diego’s cross country team on Wednesday at the season’s first Frontier League cross country meet.

More importantly, the Cardinal boys won their first league meet in a decade.

“We have a good core of kids who work hard,” said Cardinals coach Ray Vazquez. “So it’s nice for them to reap the rewards.”

Ronnie Landeros placed fifth with a time of 19 minutes and 46 seconds. Aaron Rubio added another top-10 finish in eighth while Matthew Grimes, in 12th, and Grant Sexton, in 18th, contributed points to the cause.

Dentzel’s time was 19:08, which was much slower than his race on the same Carpinteria Bluffs course the week before. Vazquez said a skateboarding injury kept him away from training for several days and understandably affected his time.

The Cardinals race again at Friday’s Dos Pueblos Invitational.
