Fast greens and some tricky pin placements made things challenging for the field in the first round of the Santa Barbara Junior Golf Tour Championship on Monday at the Valley Club.
Dodge Ward best managed the challenges the course offered and earned medalist honors with a 4-over par 75.
Kristin Henno played a solid round and opened up a 12-shot lead in the girls division with an 83.
Ward has a four-shot lead over John Etsell and Alec Constantinides in the Boys 16-over division.
Grant Amerson fired an 86 for first place in the 14-15 age bracket. He leads Briggs Boss by two shots. Michael Nam’s 92 leads the 12-13 division, and Christian Heslin (50) holds a one-shot advantage over Peter La Mantia in the 9-hole 10-11 group.
The second and final round of the Tour Championship is Monday, Aug. 16 at Montecito Country Club.
