FOOTBALL PREVIEW VIDEO SERIES: Dos Pueblos Chargers

St. Bonaventure is gone, leaving the Channel League football race up for grabs. Dos Pueblos may have won just three games last year, but make no mistake — the Chargers are contenders this year.

Senior quarterback Michael Spiritosanto has never played under center, but was a standout running back before breaking his thumb last season. He still played defense, not missing a game with the injury. As a two-year starter at third base on the baseball team, he’s got an arm to throw should he need to out of this year’s offense, which will include a spread option attack.

He said the transition has gone rather smoothly.

“It’s just hard trying to read defenses and make the right reads, but I’m getting more used to it. I’m getting better every day,” he said.

The Chargers have eight defensive starters returning from last year and five on the offensive side. The line includes a three-year starter at center in Nick Okpysh and some serious size with a couple of 280-pounders in John Dunion and Felipe Cruz.

Coach Jeff Uyesaka said that this year’s team will provide an exciting brand of football on offense.

“We’re no going to be like the old boxer who just does the jab, jab, right hook type of thing. We want to be able to move the ball and be exciting… We’re gonna try to do a lot of different things,” he said.

Dos Pueblos opens the season at home against Righetti on September 3rd.
