Santa Barbara’s Jack Perry battled to the end but came up short in the final round of the 111th Southern California Golf Association Amateur on Sunday at La Cumbre Country Club.
Scott Travers hung on to beat Perry for the title and in the process made history.
Travers, 22, of Trabuco Hills, became the first golfer since 1942 — and only the fourth in history — to hold SCGA and California State Amateur titles concurrently. The Santa Clara University student also broke Tiger Woods’ tournament scoring record of 270 by finishing at 16-under 268. He shot a 2-under 69 in the final round.
“It’s a pretty cool feeling to win both championships,” said Travers after the round. “My goal this summer was to win just one event. To win two major ones … it’s more than I hoped for.”
Perry tied Woods’ mark after shooting a 1-under 70.
Kevin Marsh, who trailed by five shots going into the final round, made a run at the leaders with a 4-under 67. The two-time SCGA Amateur champion and U.S. Mid-Amateur champ, finished two shots back at 271. Patrick Cantlay, of Los Alamitos and Servite High, also made a charge with a 67, but he fell short at 272. Cantlay defeated Perry for the CIF State individual title in a playoff last month.
Niall Platt, a recent Laguna Blanca grad, shot a final-round 70 and finished tied for 11th at 280.
Travers and Perry staged a back-and-forth battle for the lead all day.
Perry, who is headed to Northwestern, was a class act throughout the round, As the two approached the 18th green, Perry led the crowd in applause for Travers, who was two putts away from winning the championship. Perry punctuated his round with a one-putt birdie and fist pump to claim a solo second-place finish.
“I came into today thinking that it was just another round of golf, and tried to not put too much pressure on myself,” Perry said.
Turlock’s Sam Smith and Northridge’s Tim Hogarth, one of Southern California’s most decorated amateurs, tied for fifth at 9-under 275.
