Nima Roshan, the top seed in this year’s 74th Annual Santa Barbara Open tennis tournament, needed three sets to take home the title on Saturday, defeating No. 2 Luis Perez 6-7 (3), 6-3, 6-4 at the Tennis Club of Santa Barbara.
The 25-year-old Australia native and former BYU standout, currently ranked 577th by the ATP, defeated defending champion Leo Basica 6-4, 7-5 to advance to the championship round. Perez cruised past No. 4 Alexendre Anselme 6-0, 6-1 in the morning to make the final.
In Men’s Open Doubles action, second-seeded local Daniel Webster and his teammate, Mark Windes of Bakersfield. The duo defeated the No. 1 seeds, Basica and Ryan Heinberg, 4-6, 7-5, 1-0.
Roshan earned $1,500 for winning the title, while Perez took home $800 as the runner-up. The doubles champs split a $450 prize, and Basica/Heinberg split $300.
