Newport 29er sailors class of the fleet at JOs

Taylor MacDonald and Brian Bolton of Newport Harbor Yacht Club completed an impressive performance with two more race victories to wrap up the gold medal in the 29er fleet at the Southern California Junior Olympics Sailing Festival off the Santa Barbara coast.

The Newport sailors won six of the 10 races they entered. They sat out the 11th race. They finished with 13 points, 15 ahead of silver medalists Chris Ford and Mike Deady of Richmond YC.

JP Barnes and Andrew Cates of the San Diego YC took second in the 10th race and won the finale to nab the bronze with 33 points. Tucker Atterbury of the Santa Barbara Yacht Club was fourth with 36 points.

Morro Bay’s Kate Rakelly and Colleen Hackett won the C420 Class with 24 points. Samantha Gebb of Alamitos Bay moved up to take second and  Del Rey YC’s Adam Pokras and Nikki Obel placed third.

Christopher Weis and Cassie Obel of Del Rey held off teammates Seamus Dougherty and Cailin McMartin to win the CFJ class. Jimmy Madigan and Katie Donahue of Newport Harbor nipped teammates Madison Vitarelli and Chloe Dapp by one point (47-48) for third place. A fifth and a fourth in the last two races were the difference for Madigan-Donahue.

In the single-handed events, Kieran Chung of Newport Harbor won his last five races to take the laser class. Nevin Snow of San Diego dropped into second place and Corinthian YC’s Philip Lozier took third. Santa Barbara’s Cameron Walsh finished fourth.

San Francisco YC’s Annie Rossi held off Chris Vilicich of Santa Barbara to win the Laser Radial Fleet. Jordan Heldman of San Diego’s Southwestern Yacht Club took third and Santa Barbara’s Stephen Long and Hanna Vincent placed fourth and fifth, respectively.

In the Optimist Fleet, William Cefali of San Francisco YC took top honors with 21 net points, edging Santa Barbara’s Quinn Wilson, who had 23. Cooper Weitz of San Francisco’s Corinthian Yacht Club placed third with 28 points.
