Junior Olympics Regatta takes over coast

The sailboat traffic is a bit heavy this weekend along the coast as some of the top young sailors on the West Coast are taking part in the Junior Olympics Sailing Festival in the channel.

Competition is going on in six classes (Laser Laser Radial, Optimist, 29er, C420 and CFJ) through Sunday. The sailors are under the age of 20.

Taylor MacDonald and Brian Bolton of Newport Harbor YC have been dominating in the fast 29er class with nine net points. They’ve won five of eight races contest and finished second in three others.

Richmond Yacht Club’s entry of Chris Ford and MIke Deady are second with 18 points. They won the two races Macdonald and Bolton didn’t.

Third place is Santa Barbara YC’s Tucker Atterberry and Duncan Swain with 22 points. Their best finish is second in the third and sixth races.

Morro Bay’s Kate Rakelly and Colleen Hackett hold down first place in the C420 Class with a 14-point advantage. They’ve won two races and finished second in two others

In second place is Del Rey YC’s Adam Pokras and Nikki Obel followed by Jack Jorgenson and Samantha Gebb of Alamitos Bay.

Christopher Weis and Cassie Obel of Del Rey lead the CFJ class. They have six top-four finishes out of five races. Yacht club teammates Seamus Dougherty and Cailin McMartin are second and Newport Harbor’s Madison Vitarelli and Chloe Clapp are third.

In the single-handed Laser Class, Nevin Snow of Del Rey is in first place after four wins and a second in two days of competition. Newport’s Kieran Chung and Corinthian YC’s Philip Lozier are second and third, respectively. Cameron Walsh of Santa Barbara stands in fourth.

Santa Barbara YC sailors dominate the Laser Radial Class. Sky Adams leads the fleet with 17 points. She has three wins and two seconds. Annie Rossi of San Francisco is a close second with 22 points.

Chris Vilicich, Stephen Long and Hanna Vincent of Santa Barbara round out the top five.

Quinn Wilson of Santa Barbara leads the Optomist Fleet with 13 points. He’s won four races. William Cefali of San Francisco is in second and Chance Weston of Cabrillo Beach YC is third.
