Goleta Valley South holds on for section title

Trey Klopstein ended the drama for the Goleta Valley South Little League 10-11 All-Stars Tuesday night, striking out the final Moorpark batter with the bases load to preserve a 10-8 win that  gave them the Section 1 championship.

It is the second straight section title for Goleta Valley South. The section covers San Luis Obispo, Santa Barbara and Ventura counties.

GVSLL now advances to the Division 3 Northern Sub-Division Tournament, hosted by Ontario Western LL, that includes section winners from Orange County, the San Fernando Valley and the greater Los Angeles area.  The first game is Saturday  against Section 4 (LA / Torrance/ El Sugundo) at 5 p.m.

After allowing a run in the top of the first, Goleta Valley South got  two-run homers from Thomas Hantgin and Kyle Ownsby to take a 4-1 lead. The local squad  made it 6-1 after consecutive doubles by DJ Sharpe and Sam Roberts plated two more runs in the bottom of the frame.

In the third, Josh Feldhaus scored on Sharpe’s second hit of the game and Louis Shalhoob hit a sacrifice to score Carson Vom Steeg to bring the score to 8-2.

Moorpark battled back, scoring four runs in the top of the fifth to cut the score to 8-6.

But GVS plated Ryan Guardino on a sacrifice fly by Ownsby and a RBI single by Vom Steeg in the bottom of the inning bring the score to 10-6.

Vom Steeg pitched into the sixth inning, striking our two before Klopstein took over.  Moorpark scored two and had the bases loaded before Klopstein got the final out.
