Foresters bully Packers once again, 11-2

Both Carson Smith and Jared Womack are leaving the Santa Barbara Foresters over the weekend to travel to Amsterdam to play with Team USA, and considering the way they’ve been playing it’s a big loss.

They contributed to a big win on Thursday, as Smith struck out eight and allowed two hits through five innings and Womack had a two-run double. It was all part of a 11-2 win in the rubber match of a three-game series against the rival Santa Maria Valley Packers.

“It’s gonna be really fun to go to Amsterdam and it’s a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. But I’m definitely gonna miss this. I love Santa Barbara,” said Womack, an Oklahoma State catcher who leads the California Collegiate League with a .446 average. He has an on-base percentage of .538 through 20 games played.

“It was a great day,” said manager Bill Pintard. “We really put it on ’em today, for the second straight day… We’ll adjust without Womack and Carson. We’ll get through it.”

BOX SCORE

Nick Melino led off the bottom of the first with a double, which was followed by a Walker Moore single. Jeremy Rathjen was hit by a pitch, and Womack followed with a double. The Foresters scored four in the first, one in the second, two in the fourth and four in the fifth to take a commanding 11-0 lead by the time Smith left the game. The Texas State hurler recorded a jaw-dropping 19 strikeouts in his last 10 innings for the Foresters.

Moore finished with three base hits, three RBIs and a run scored. Michael Ratterree had two singles, three runs scored and an RBI.

The series began with a bitter 5-4 home loss to the Packers on Tuesday, but the Foresters won 14-4 at Elks Field on Wednesday night before taking Thursday’s finale.

“You can’t ask for anything more. I asked them to respond and they responded,” said Pintard.

The Foresters remain in first place in the CCL at 11-4 with an overall record of 17-6. The Packers are now 12-8, 8-8. Santa Barbara hosts the Conejo Oaks at 5 p.m. on Friday.
