UCSB midfielder Danny Barrera scored the winning goal on a header to give the Ventura County Fusion a 2-1 win over the league-leading Orange County Blue Star in a Premier Development League soccer match on Saturday in Ventura.
Barrera headed in a cross from Gambian international striker Ousman Jagne in the 53rd minute and the Fusion held on for the victory that moved it within five points of Orange County.
“I’ve scored headers before,” Barrera told the Ventura County Star. “It’s not about your height. It’s about getting in the right space.”
Barrera assisted on the Fusion’s first goal as defender Jamie Scope headed in his corner kick to even the score at 1-1 in first-half stoppage time.
Former Gaucho Ivan Becerra also plays for the Fusion.
The Orange County team included UC Irvine striker Amani Walker, who leads the PDL’s Southwest Division with 12 goals.
