South begins preparing for All-Star football game

The South team will gather Monday at Carpinteria High for their first practice for next week’s County All-Star Football game.

The game, sponsored by the Santa Barbara Suburban Kiwanis Club, features some of the top graduated seniors from county high schools. They’ll go at each other on Friday night, July 16 at Santa Maria High. Kickoff is slated at 7:15 p.m.

The South team, coached by Carpinteria’s Ben Hallock, consists of players from Bishop Diego, Carpinteria, Santa Barbara High, San Marcos Dos Pueblos, Santa Ynez and Cate School. The team will start practice around 6 p.m.

Schools representing the North squad are Cabrillo, Lompoc, Righetti, Santa Maria, St.Joseph and Pioneer Valley. Mike Regan of Santa Maria is the coach.

There is no shortage of hard-charging running backs on the South roster.

Cody Clark carried the offensive load for San Marcos early last season before going down with an injury. But the Royals never missed a beat with his replacement, Kyle Miller. He finished the season with 710 yards and earned All-County honors.

Scott Arellano returned to his hometown school of Santa Ynez after spending three years at Oaks Christian and made an immediate impact for the Pirates. In his first game, he rushed for 247 yards against Carpinteria. His running helped Santa Ynez make the playoffs for the first time since 2000.

Thankfully for coach Hallock, Arellano will be running the ball for his team this time.

In addition to the San Marcos duo and Arellano, the South has some bruising fullbacks in Shane Taylor of Dos Pueblos and Nick Razo of Carpinteria.

Santa Ynez’s Tyler Shean and R.J. Rosborough of Santa Barbara are the South quarterbacks. Shean, an all-county selection, passed for 1,129 yards and rushed for 392 in leading the Pirates to the playoffs. Rosborough is also a good passer and runner.

They’ll have two solid targets at tight end in all-county pick Bennie Kirkwood of San Marcos and Jeremy Stein of Carpinteria. The wide receiver group includes a trio from Dos Pueblos: Brandon Tangel, Cody Bidlow and Eric Arroyo, Rowan Di Mase of Santa Ynez and Derrick Dallmeyer of San Marcos. Tangel, a big-play specialist on offense and defense, was on the all-county team.

San Marcos’ offensive line, which paved the way for Clark and Miller, has two members from that unit on the squad, Shawn Harvey and Jeff Ramirez. Santa Barbara also has two linemen, Jorie Lazaro and Stephen Peña.

Two-way lineman Paul Ortega is Bishop Diego’s lone representative on the team. Cate School is also represented by a lineman, Ugo Nwakike.

The South possesses an outstanding punter in Carpinteria’s Stein. He averaged 43 yards per punt.

Hallock said the key to coaching an all-star team is “focusing on team building and making sure the guys have a great experience.”

Ticket for the game are $10 for adults and $5 for kids 12-under.

There will be  players’  banquet  at the Marriott Santa Ynez Valley in Buellton on Sunday July 11 at 5 p.m. The cost is $25 for adults and $15 for ages 4-12..
