Team 805, Zelko represent at U.S. Open Championships

The 805 was represented well at this year’s U.S. Open Volleyball Championships, the national indoor tournament recently completed in Phoenix, Ariz.

Representing the fullest, in both name and result, was Team 805, which won the Men’s A title.  Team 805, featuring former Gaucho Aaron Richman and former San Marcos Royas Dan Matheson and Rich Pertsulakes, defeated a squad from Virginia in the championship match. Richman, an outside hitter who played at UCSB from 2004-2007, was named MVP of the division.

There were other locals that embraced success in Phoenix.

Former Gaucho and Santa Barbara resident Steve Zelko won his 10th career gold medal at the event, joining forces with RBC/Under Armour 50 to win the Men’s Over-50 title. Zelko has won his 10 titles in a 14-year span.

Green Star Coffee Shots, a women’s team competing in the Women’s A Gold Division, had former local prep stars Ruth McGolpin, Amanda Spoor, Erin Calkins and Susan Croshaw on its roster, plus current Carpinteria High coach Katie Dolge. The Coffee Shots placed fourth out of 62 teams in the division.
